THING #23

I am really glad that I did Nebraska Learns 2.0. Anne and I both worked on it, and it was a lot of fun when we could use the buddy system and talk about these "Things" and how they could possibly help the library or even for our own personal use. The instant messaging was fun, and there were a lot of exercises that were a great learning experience plus the fun part. I really enjoyed You Tube and the videos. I can see how the 7 1/2 habits of highly successful lifelong learners that we started with at the beginning has played a large part in finishing Nebraska Learns 2.0. We started late, but soon caught up and learned a lot during the entire journey. I would certainly be interested if you came up with another discovery program in the future.

THING #22

I looked through a lot of the podcast directories and really liked NETV and NPR. I added All About Books--Net Radio to my feeds on my Bloglines account. I liked the book reviews they were giving, and they had a review on the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. We have not yet ordered this for our library so the prompting was great. I'm sure our patrons will be looking for this particular book.

THING #21

I thought this was a fun Thing#21. I thoroughly enjoyed looking at all of the videos. Anne showed me some really neat animal videos, and I liked the 1970s commercials. I chose Buddy Holly because I love his music. All of this has been a great learning experience!

THING #20

I selected Recipe Key from the foods category of 2008 Web 2.0 Awards. You can see new recipes added by cooking friends and are able to see comments and ratings made on contributed recipes. You can also contribute recipes. I found a great Zucchini-pecan Bread recipe that I can use. Recipes are by meal type--dificulty, cusine, popular ingredient, cook method, and time. One thing that I thought was wonderful was the grocery list tools. You can find your recipe and add it to your grocery list and then it lists on the grocery list what you need as compared to what you have in your pantry. Pretty Cool! The grocery list tools were great, too. You can print your list, e-mail it, or text message it. We have a lot of library patrons who love cookbooks, and are looking for recipes on the internet. I can see them liking this site!

THING #19

I created an account in Google Docs and then created some documents. I was surprised that it was all so easy-just like Word. I made a list of new library books and tried out some of the different fonts. It was all fun. I also did an experiment with a spreadsheet, and that was also easy to do. I can see where we could use this in the library or a person could use it at home on their own personal computer. You would not need to purchase Microsoft Word software, and could just use this.

THING #18

Thing #18 was a little intense. I did add my blog to the Favorite Blogs page, but when I highlighted it, I also highlighted my short message (I am not sure what I am doing), so that was underlined as well as my blog address. But I was there, and my blog is there. Also, I didn't start at the top of the page so my blog got put into the middle. This was all very interesting, and when was done I thought kind of fun, too. I added my favorites to books and a TV show. That was easy. Nebraska Learns 2.0 certainly has been a learning experience. It has also taken more time than I thought.

THING #17

Call me oldfashioned, but I am one of those people who would have a hard time having my work edited. I like to know that what I am reading is correct and not changed by someone else. I understand about it being a community project, but...... I did enjoy looking at the library wikis, and found some delicious fudge recipes and also a chocolate thumbprint cookie recipe on SJCPL Subject Guides. Also Library Success had good ideas on materials selection and maintenance--Selecting materials for libraries, Orgainzing Library Collections, and Weeding Library Collections. I think the Book Lovers Wiki - developed by the Princeton Public Library with their book reviews would help libraries with their collection and development. I know I enjoyed looking at them and like to know what other people think about the books that I am interested in.

THING #16

I would like to comment about Rick Anderson's three "icebergs" posing threats to our success. Since we now have Nebraskaccess and all of the databases, there is no reason to purchase the print format of Books in Print. We do not have a reason to have the Readers Peiodical Guide either as we used to have a lot of kids doing reports and using our printed magazines for resources and now they have all they need on the internet. Libraries are poorly staffed and equipped for teaching. We have found that almost everyone who comes in to the library to use a computer has an e-mail address and knows how to access it and use it no matter their age. They usually only have questions in regard to help with printing or maybe finding a site. And in regard to the third "iceberg," our library has a web site and our card catalog is online. We find that our patrons are continually using this more and more all of the time. It seems to be so much easier to browse at home at midnight than to call and ask if we have a book or come in to search for the book on the shelf. Maybe this has to do with us being such a rural library and Cherry County being such a large area. Another thing we have seen expanded is the number of patrons who come in with their own laptops and use WiFi. I think Library 2.0 is more than about technology. I think that library patrons and community members working together with the Library director, Board of Trustees, and library staff, and also the Nebraska Library Commission and the regional library systems can bring about positive changes. We need to know what our library patrons want and need, and we need to work at providing those needs. Our library director needs to have a vision and the support and ideas from the Board of Trustees and staff. The Nebraska Library Commission and regional library systems can help to attain these goals and have new ideas for visions through workshops and this online class-- Nebraska Learns 2.0. Right now our director, Anne, has a vision. It is a renovation of the library to make our spaces and services more user-centric and inviting. This is an exciting time for libraries, but most libraries have limited funding which makes it even more challenging. But we are all working together because we love our library and want it to be the best it can possibly be.

THING #15

This is something I probably would not use, and I don't see how the library can use it either. I do think that if you had a PowerPoint you had created and wanted to share with several other people, it would be beneficial. I looked at several slide shows and really did enjoy the USA welcome signs from the Nebraskaccess. In fact I added it as a favorite to my account! This has been another great learning experience! Here is my link where you can see what I liked.

THING #14

I really did not know what to expect from Delicious. It sounds like recipes or food or maybe cooking, but bookmarking??????? Anyway, I thought it was a fun one. I looked at the tags other Delicious users had assigned to Nebraskaccess, and mine were right there with them. I had Library, School, Nebraska, Database. I hadn't thought of Resources, but that one was good, too. I thought what Holdrege Public Library was doing with this was wonderful. What a good idea. and so easy, too. It's a great way to share bookmarks with other people that can be accessed from anywhere. I opened an account and added some bookmarks, and then Anne and I networked. WOW!! Will have to go back later and look again.

THING #13

Twitter does not impress me a whole lot. It is something I probably will not use. I can't imagine that someone would be interested in my day-to-day experiences. Which is o.k. with me-- I am a very private person. I don't see how our library would be able to use it either, although I'm sure it has it's merits. There was one thing that was interesting. I searched for mentions of our fair city, and found out that the Butt Bandit was caught. Someone was reading Love Finds You in Valentine, Nebraska, and was enjoying it--good to know! And also there is no place in Nebraska to sit down. Kilgore to Valentine is 24 miles, one picnic table. O.K.!!!!!

THING #12

I think that LibraryThing has been the most fun yet--and so easy, too. I love lists and organization. I only added 6 books to my list, but I could have been easily carried away and had a long list. I will just have to return at a later day. I'm not sure how LibraryThing could be used in our library, but a small library could certainly take advantage. It would make it so much easier and cheaper to use it as a cataloging tool. I know that I could use this personally, too. I am now using the old fashioned method (pen and paper) to make a list of books that I have read. LibraryThing can make this sooooo much easier for me. I had no idea that all of this was available. The gentleman who put this together certainly did a great job.

THING #11

I am amazed at all of the new technology. I am in the age group that never had a telephone or a television in my home until I was a late teenager. We also did not even have REA until I was about 12. We had a windcharger and a row of batteries in the cellar of our house for our electricity. So unlike all of these kids who are growing up with all of these new things--cell phones, ipods, DVDs, digital cameras, internet, computers, etc. etc. But I think all of these new things are wonderful. I have an answering machine, a cell phone and several e-mail accounts and two young granddaughters who are quick to fill me in on anything they think I should know. The oldest, who is nine, changed the ringtone on my phone when I wasn't looking. They seem to know exactly which buttons to push. My daughter's new stove just needs someone to push the right buttons to turn the stove or the oven on or even clean the oven--so easy. I have also learned a lot from Nebraska 2.0 learns. I did not realize there is so much out there. Blogging, Flickr, RSS and Feeds, Instant Messaging. I don't think I will get it all learned in my lifetime, but it sure has been fun to learn as much as I can.

MagMyPic

This young man may not be a rock star, but he sure does have a big smile and a favorite book. You can just tell that he enjoys visiting the library, and that certainly entitles him to be on the cover of his own magazine.

THING #9

I looked around Flickr and really liked Flickr Color Pickr. Thought that was really great. Also liked Montagr. This has been a very interesting "Thing". I didn't realize that there was so much out there, and that all of this was possible. I didn't have a Flickr Account before, but now do, and hoping to come back and check out more of this.

This has been a very interesting Thing. I am not sure that I would use Flickr personally or for the library. However, there are probably a lot of ways that it could be useful. This picture was taken when we had a Friend's Brunch in our meeting room to honor our core group of Friends. The brunch was delicious, and we had a lot of fun.
